Ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents has always been a top priority during my time as mayor of Chestermere. A safe community is the foundation of a thriving city where people feel secure in their homes, on the streets, and in their everyday lives. It’s about creating a city where families can grow, businesses can flourish, and everyone has the freedom to enjoy life without fear or concern.
Chestermere is a city that prides itself on its welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, but like any growing community, safety remains a key concern for residents. As Chestermere’s population continued to grow, so did the challenges related to crime prevention, emergency preparedness, and public safety. That’s why, as mayor, I took a proactive approach to enhance community safety, working closely with local law enforcement, emergency services, and community organizations to create a comprehensive strategy for making Chestermere a secure place to live, work, and raise a family.
In this blog post, I will walk you through the key initiatives and strategies I led to ensure Chestermere remains a safe, secure, and thriving community for all.
Collaborating with Local Law Enforcement
A key component of community safety is the relationship between local law enforcement and the community they serve. During my time as mayor, I worked closely with the Chestermere RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and the Chestermere Community Policing Advisory Committee to ensure that our police force had the resources and support needed to effectively keep the community safe.
I advocated for increasing police presence in high-traffic areas, particularly in neighborhoods where residents had expressed concerns about crime or safety. This helped improve response times and gave residents greater peace of mind knowing that officers were actively engaged in the community.
In addition to maintaining a visible police presence, we also focused on proactive policing efforts aimed at preventing crime before it happens. This included increasing community outreach programs, such as neighborhood watch groups, community patrols, and crime prevention education. By fostering better communication between the police and residents, we created an environment where everyone could contribute to improving safety in Chestermere.
We also worked to enhance the relationship between law enforcement and marginalized groups within the community. By ensuring that all residents felt safe and supported, regardless of their background or circumstances, we created a more inclusive and responsive approach to policing.
Emergency Preparedness and Response
A safe community is one that is well-prepared to respond to emergencies, whether it’s a natural disaster, public health crisis, or any other unforeseen event. Chestermere, like many other communities, faces a variety of potential risks, including flooding, fires, and extreme weather events. Ensuring that our city was prepared for these emergencies was a key priority of mine as mayor.
I worked with local emergency services, including the Chestermere Fire Department and the local EMS (Emergency Medical Services), to develop and implement a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan. This plan included regular training exercises, community-wide drills, and education programs that helped residents understand how to stay safe during emergencies.
We also worked to improve Chestermere’s infrastructure to make it more resilient to disasters. This included upgrading flood prevention systems, ensuring that drainage systems were maintained, and creating emergency shelters in key locations around the city. By investing in the city’s infrastructure, we were able to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, the community would be able to respond quickly and effectively.
Additionally, we focused on public education around emergency preparedness, offering workshops and resources to residents to help them plan for various emergency scenarios. From creating emergency kits to understanding evacuation routes, our goal was to empower residents with the knowledge and tools they needed to protect themselves and their families.
Strengthening Mental Health Support and Community Services
Community safety extends beyond physical protection—it’s also about mental and emotional well-being. We know that issues such as addiction, mental illness, and domestic violence can sometimes lead to unsafe situations, both for individuals and for the broader community. During my time as mayor, I worked to ensure that Chestermere had the necessary resources and support systems in place to address these critical issues.
I worked with local organizations to improve mental health services in the city, including expanding access to counseling, therapy, and crisis intervention programs. By increasing funding for mental health resources, we were able to provide residents with the help they needed to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. This, in turn, helped reduce incidents of violence, self-harm, and other behaviors that could undermine community safety.
We also focused on increasing support for families facing domestic violence. We partnered with local shelters, counseling centers, and law enforcement to ensure that victims had access to the support they needed to escape abusive situations. Providing a safe environment for survivors of domestic violence and working to prevent future occurrences were essential elements of the overall safety strategy.
Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)
One of the innovative approaches we took to improve safety in Chestermere was through the use of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). CPTED is a strategy that focuses on modifying the physical environment to reduce the opportunities for crime and improve overall public safety. This approach is based on the idea that the design of public spaces and buildings can influence criminal behavior.
We worked with urban planners and law enforcement to incorporate CPTED principles into the design of public spaces, parks, and new developments in Chestermere. This included increasing visibility in public areas by removing dense shrubbery and installing better lighting in poorly lit areas, such as parking lots and alleyways. We also focused on ensuring that public spaces were well-maintained and inviting, encouraging positive social interactions and reducing the likelihood of criminal activity.
By using CPTED principles, we were able to design safer public spaces that discouraged criminal behavior and encouraged residents to take ownership of their surroundings, leading to a safer and more engaged community.
Supporting Community Engagement and Volunteerism
Finally, I believe that building a safe and secure Chestermere is not just the responsibility of law enforcement and emergency services—it’s a shared responsibility that involves the entire community. That’s why I placed a strong emphasis on fostering a culture of community engagement and volunteerism.
I supported initiatives that encouraged residents to get involved in neighborhood watch programs, volunteer in community safety programs, and participate in local events that promoted positive community interactions. When residents are actively engaged in their neighborhoods, they are more likely to look out for each other and work together to create safer spaces.
We also supported youth programs that focused on building leadership skills and fostering positive relationships between young people and the broader community. By providing safe spaces for youth to engage in recreational activities, we helped prevent juvenile delinquency and provided opportunities for young people to develop valuable life skills.
Conclusion: A Safe and Secure Chestermere for All
Creating a safe and secure Chestermere is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to the well-being of our residents. Through partnerships with law enforcement, emergency services, mental health providers, and the community, we worked to build a safer, more resilient city.
The safety of Chestermere’s residents was, and always will be, one of my highest priorities. Whether it’s through improving law enforcement, preparing for emergencies, supporting mental health, or engaging the community in safety efforts, I’m proud of the work we did to strengthen safety in our city.
As Chestermere continues to grow, it’s important that we remain committed to making safety a top priority. By continuing to work together, we can ensure that Chestermere remains a secure and thriving community where everyone can feel safe and confident in their surroundings.
